American Idol revealed its top 10 Monday night with six contestants being voted through by America and the remaining eight contestants singing for their lives in order to persuade the judges to give them one of the remaining four spots. As the results played out during the show, however, Twitter was not happy about the fact that America didn’t save the people of color.
Contestants who were sent to the “victory zone” were Maddie Poppe, Cade Foehner, Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Michael J. Woodard, and Catie Turner. Michelle Sussett, Marcio Donaldson, Dennis Lorenzo, Garrett Jacobs, Jonny Brenns, Mara Justine, Jurnee, and Ada Vox were all sent to the “danger zone.” Before Woodard joined the “victory zone,” Twitter erupted with tweets like:
#AmericanIdol I am a white woman and I am offended by these picks.

I can’t believe I’m tweeting about American Idol, but damn America you are not responsible enough to make decisions #AmericanIdol

In the end, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, who were utterly shocked that America did not vote through Ada Vox, immediately sent the drag queen to the top 10 after her killer performance of Jennifer Holliday’s “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” and later, after their actual deliberation, saved Jurnee, Michelle Sussett, and Dennis Lorenzo.
And as we said goodbye to four contestants, and “Hello” to the top 10, Lionel Richie gave the eliminated contestants some guidance. “The fact you made it this far actually signals special — you have to know that,” Richie told the contestants. “When I started out in this business they told the Commodores no and no and no and no, and we made it. You understand me? This is your launch pad. You have made it already. The world knows who you are. America knows who you are.”
