‘TV’s Top 5’: A Deep Dive Into the State of Broadcast

Welcome to the 256th episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.

Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).

More from The Hollywood Reporter

This week, we shifted from streaming to focusing on broadcast ahead of next month’s upfront presentations. Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:

1. Headlines

Tyler Perry, For All Mankind, The Witcher, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Oldboy, Travis Kelce, Don Johnson, The Gates and The Talk lead the week’s top small-screen headlines.

2. State of Broadcast

What’s renewed, ending and on the bubble? We round up the state of affairs at the five broadcast networks.

3. What’s “New” on Broadcast

As a result of last year’s dual strikes, the broadcast networks already have more than a dozen new scripted dramas and comedies waiting for a time slot on their respective network’s schedules. This segment looks at the crowded field and how it impacts pilot season.

4. Pilot Season Roundup

Remember the days of 100 broadcast pilots from a decade ago? Those days are largely over as this year, NBC and ABC are the only networks really making pilots as CBS takes a year off, and Fox and The CW change course.

5. Critic’s Corner

As usual, we end with Dan’s thoughts on this week’s new and returning series. In this episode, he weighs in on Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, Max’s Conan O’Brien Must Go, Hulu’s Under the Bridge, HBO’s The Jinx Pt. 2 and Tubi’s Big Mood.
