Former President Donald Trump called into Fox News Primetime Tuesday where he addressed the hesitancy of many of his supporters to get the COVID-19 vaccination. While there is opposition to the vaccine among many groups, it’s most prevalent among Republicans. According to a recent CBS News poll, a third of Republicans say they will not get vaccinated, compared to only about 10 percent of Democrats who feel the same. Another poll showed that nearly half of Republican men say they will not get the vaccine.

Some of the vaccine hesitancy among Republicans may be due to conservative media questioning its safety. Less than 24 hours before Trump recommended getting the vaccine to the Fox News audience, Tucker Carlson was raising questions about the vaccine.

Trump has been largely silent on the vaccine in recent weeks, despite him and former first lady Melania Trump getting secretly vaccinated at the White House in January. But despite his previous silence, Trump is now attempting to quell any apprehension among his supporters.

Asked if he would recommend that viewers get the vaccine, Trump replied, “I would. I would recommend it, and I would recommend it to a lot of people that don't want to get it, and a lot of those people voted for me, frankly. But again, we have our freedoms and we have to live by that, and I agree with that also. But it’s a great vaccine. It’s a safe vaccine and it’s something that works.”

While Trump was the only living former U.S. president not to appear in a recent ad assuring Americans that the vaccine is safe and urging them to get it as soon as it’s available, Trump now echoed that sentiment.

“It works incredibly well, 95 percent, maybe even more than that,” Trump said. “It works incredibly well, and it’s really saving our country and it’s saving, frankly, the world.”

Fox News Primetime airs weeknights at 7 p.m. on Fox News Channel.
