Chef Marcus Samuelsson has built a little something of a name for himself. The Ethiopian-born culinary artist is not only renowned for his 30-something restaurants, including Red Rooster Harlem in New York, but also famous for being the youngest chef to ever receive three stars from the New York Times for his work at Scandinavian restaurant Aquavit, being named New York City’s best chef in 2009 by the James Beard Foundation, winning Top Chef Masters in 2010, and hosting President Obama’s first state dinner. It’s a pretty impressive resume.

But while he found great success in his commercial kitchens, his personal kitchen was lacking—until now. Samuelson recently partnered with Copenhagen-based kitchen design firm Reform to reimagine his workspace at home. “The previous kitchen was half the size and didn’t have the appliances, design style, or functionality I really needed,” Samuelsson tells House Beautiful.

Reform partners with architects and designers like Jean Nouvel and Muller Van Severen on kitchen cabinet and drawer designs that customers can incorporate into their homes. For his kitchen, Samuelsson chose the company’s FRAME cabinetry in Dark Oak, designed by Swedish firm Note Design Studio.

“I immediately fell in love with these cabinets due to the clean lines of Scandinavian design, but they also meet my warm nature-inspired aesthetic,” Samuelsson says. The connection between the chef and the design style is not surprising—Samuelsson grew up in Sweden before moving to the United States in the 1990s. “I draw inspiration from my surroundings, so it was important to me to bring in all-natural colors and textures into my kitchen,” he adds.

The team accented the rustic-yet-streamlined FRAME cabinets with brass fixtures, then made a bold statement with dramatic marble counters, a black-and-white geometric tiled floor, and an emerald-green backsplash behind the stove, which, along with the other appliances in the kitchen, is from Monogram Luxury Appliances.

Samuelsson is, unsurprisingly, thrilled with the result, praising the craftsmanship in particular. “Craftsmanship for me is one of the reasons why I love cooking,” he says. “If you dive deeper into the craft of cooking, you always find more, something to learn, and room to make it your own.”
