Toronto woman warns TikTok about alleged taxi scam: 'Reported it to the police'

A Toronto woman’s TikTok video allegedly led to the arrest of a scamming taxi driver.

TikToker @sajakilani issued a warning after a bizarre encounter. She claimed that a teenager and driver staged a bait-and-switch scam to steal her debit card. After she posted footage of the incident, she shared an update saying, “TORONTO POLICE CAUGHT HIM!!!” Here’s her PSA to others.

While walking down the street one day, @sajakilani claimed a teenage boy approached her. The teen said he had taken a cab, but the driver only accepted cards. He asked her to pay the driver with her card, and he would give her the cash.

She agreed, but when she gave the driver her debit card, she noticed that the boy seemed nervous. Then when she retrieved her card, she noticed it wasn’t hers.

She opened the driver’s door and said she saw her real card between his legs. But the driver tried to laugh it off as just some funny prank.

“If I didn’t work for my card back you would have just walked away with it,” @sajakilani said.

Furious, she told the driver that she could record them. This prompted him and the teen, who had gotten in the car, to put on their face masks. She recorded the driver, including his license plate, as he was leaving.

Some TikTokers claimed that they had similar experiences in Toronto.

“I work in the bank and this was a taxi fraud that’s been on the rise. Exact situation happens, they switch cards, take money out every way possible,” a user said.

“This happened to my mom like 2 weeks ago they took 3K in her account. We reported it to the police,” another wrote.

“Omg this exact situation happened when I was with my friends but we didn’t follow through,” someone commented.
