10. White Guy Blinking Meme

You’ve probably seen this meme so many times you thought it’s always been floating around the internet. In reality, this shocked face only recently gained popularity in July of this year — enter blinking meme here. And who is this handsome ginger? Drew Scanlon is a video editor for Giant Bomb. He can also add internet famous to his résumé.

9. Taylor Swift’s Comeback

After being rocked with controversy, breakups, slander, and the great trunk mystery of the summer, Taylor Swift got the world talking with her epic song “Look What You Made Me Do.” Fans analyzed every line of the lyrics for clues regarding her feuds with Kanye West and Katy Perry. They searched for mentions of her past boyfriends. They embraced her newfound snake reputation. Swift did what she does best; she got the world interested in her again.

8. Salt Bae

Turkish chef Nursret Gökçe was merely doing his job when he became an internet sensation. With a simply, flamboyant flick of the wrist, Salt Bae was born. Since he became famous, many celebrities have stopped by his steakhouse in Dubai to have their meat salted by the Bae. Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael Phelps have been spotted in the restaurant, and most recently Drake and DJ Khalid reenacted the move with Gökçe.

7. Avengers: Infinity War Trailer

While many new movie trailers hit the Web this year, none made quite as big a splash as Avengers: Infinity War. The Marvel film will combine all of your favorite heroes and villains in one epic production. Fans have been going crazy in anticipation of the 2018 release.

6. BBC Dad

Robert E. Kelly was live with the BBC via Skype from his home when his toddler Marion strutted into the room, crashing the interview. The father’s attempt to continue the interview was funny, but his wife, Kim Jung-A, hysterically trying to wrangle the couple’s children was true internet gold. Oh, what a laugh we shared!

5. Donald Trump’s Twitter Account Deactivated

Perhaps no one dominated the news more in 2017 than President Trump — and mainly because of his erratic Twitter use. But for a brief 11 minutes this year, Trump was silenced. Twitter employee Bahtiyar Duysak told the New York Times the whole debacle was an accident. On his final day of employment in the company’s Trust and Safety division, Duysak petitioned to have Trump’s Twitter account deactivated for violating harassment terms — a move he was sure would never go through. The rest, as they say, is history.

4. “Covfefe”

Speaking of Trump’s Twitter activity, in the wee hours of May 31, 2017, the president rattled off an odd tweet: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.” Twitter users, news anchors, and concerned citizens tried to make sense of the new word. What was Trump trying to tell us? Or did the president simply fall asleep midtweet during a late night Fox News binge session? Sadly, the world would never know. Later that same morning, the tweet was deleted, and this was Trump’s only response: “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’ ??? Enjoy!” Oh, we definitely did.

1. The #MeToo Movement

2017 was truly the year of the woman. No other movement gained more attention, caused more change, and made more of a difference than the #MeToo movement that swept the internet and the world. Activist Tarana Burke was the first to use #MeToo, and it quickly turned into a global sensation as women shared their stories of sexual misconduct. But for Burke, the movement means so much more than winning over the internet. “On one side, it’s a bold declarative statement that ‘I’m not ashamed’ and ‘I’m not alone,’” she told CNN. “On the other side, it’s a statement from survivor to survivor that says, ‘I see you, I hear you, I understand you, and I’m here for you or I get it.’”
