Tom Brady found himself in the hot seat earlier this month for The Roast of Tom Brady, which drew in more than 13 million viewers in the week after its live premiere. Throughout the brutal roast, celebrities, comedians, and fellow athletes took jabs at the seven-time Super Bowl champion, and at times, his children and ex-wife Gisele Bündchen became the subject of jokes. Once his family got sucked into the mix, it wasn't fun for him.

Brady opened up about the roast experience in a May 13 interview on The Pivot Podcast. While he didn't mind the punchlines aimed at him, going after his kids was a bridge too far.

"I liked when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun," Brady said. "I didn’t like the way they affected my kids... [It's] the bittersweet aspect of when you do something that you think is one way and then all of a sudden you realize I wouldn’t do that again because of the way that it affected actually the people that I care about the most in the world."

He went on to explain how the roast changed his approach to being a father to 16-year-old Jack, 14-year-old Benjamin, and 11-year-old Vivian.

“It makes you in some ways a better parent going through it," Brady said. "Sometimes you’re naïve. You don’t know."

"I love when people are making fun of me. I always said when I was going through the Deflategate stuff that I watched three things on TV: Premier League soccer, golf, and comedy shows. Every time I turned on SportsCenter it was like, are you f--king kidding me? I just want to laugh," he continued. "I wanted to do the roast because Jeff Ross became somebody I knew. But you don’t see the full picture all the time."

All in all, he said the Netflix roast was "a good lesson for me as a parent."

"I’m going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it," he vowed. "At the same time, I’m happy everyone who was there had a lot of fun. If we’re not laughing about things, we’re crying. We should have more fun. What do we love? We love laughing in the locker room. Let’s do more of that and love each other and celebrate other people’s success."

Brady reportedly wasn't the only one who was upset about the jokes about his family. According to People magazine, ex-wife Gisele Bündchen was purportedly furious after her and Brady's marriage—and its eventual collapse in 2022—became joke fodder.

Roasts are certainly not for the faint of heart, and even football stars like Tom Brady have a line that shouldn't be crossed.
