TikTok handyman shares the 'easiest' DIY way to hang a light, and people are calling it 'genius'

Ryan Walker, an influencer known as Random DIY Guy, has racked up thousands of views on TikTok by sharing some of his best home repair tricks to date — and TikTok users are seriously grateful.

Recently, Walker demonstrated everything from how to hide an “ugly” air vent to how to better organize your kitchen cabinets. But this week, he’s wowing the internet once more with an electrical tip that makes hanging a new light fixture way easier.

In the clip, Walker climbs a ladder to hang the new light above his kitchen sink. Yet instead of struggling to hold the long pendant in one hand while screwing it into the ceiling with the other, he grabs a roomy backpack and places the light fixture inside. This way, the backpack acts as the “extra hand” he needs to get the job done without breaking a sweat.

While the tip may seem simple on its surface, TikTokers who’ve done the task before are applauding Walker’s forward thinking.

“God this is genius,” wrote a TikToker named Collin (@colshh_). “Nothing like wiring it wrong then having to undo everything just to start over with your arms burning.”

“Bro is living in 3023…,” added Ryan Boyer (@ryanboyer314).

“Wut!!! Usually I hold it while my husband yells at me lol,” commented @jodeewilk.

In fact, several people admitted it never occurred to them to use a backpack like this. Instead, they’ve either asked another person to help them hold the light or suffered through it on their own. Either way, someone was usually left with two sore arms.

Home DIY tips like this one are all over TikTok lately and seem to be growing in popularity by the day. To date, videos filed under the hashtag #HomeHacks have more than 7.2 billion views combined, proving that people are always looking for easy solutions to common household issues.
