Tiffany Haddish is coming to her own defense while also reflecting on where she’s been and where she’s going in the form of her new memoir, I Curse You With Joy.

Set to debut on May 7, the actress/comedian explained to PEOPLE how this book differs from her first bestseller, The Last Black Unicorn.

“I wanted this book to be about something,” explained the 44-year-old. “I felt like I needed to live a little more life and get a better understanding of where I am now.”

According to Haddish, the new book picks up where the last one left off as she dives deeper into the pros and cons of being in the spotlight as it relates to personal struggles like her mother’s mental illness, having to become her family’s caretaker before winding up in foster care, her public scandals including her multiple DUI-related arrests, the loss of her grandmother, and her breakup with Common.

“I’ve learned to take tomatoes being thrown at me and turn them into tomato sauce and I’m going to make some spaghetti,” she teased.

In a preview, Haddish reflected on her onstage persona and how she handled the pressures of fitting into a certain mold.

“It was like they couldn’t get their heads around the existence of a woman who wasn’t super polite and polished. I have noticed that Black women get pressured to try to fit into a mold, do the Clair Huxtable, be the epitome of Black excellence. But I am not Clair Huxtable,” the Girls Trip star wrote. “Where I come from, we’re loud, we clap, we point fingers, we reach out, and snatch your soul. When we’re happy, we’re happy; when we’re mad, we’re mad; when we’re sad, we’re sad. And we are going to let you know it. A lot of us are not shy about talking about sex, but a lot of times, that makes other people uncomfortable.”

She also revealed the advice she received from the late Full House star Bob Saget after being told that she should be a “clean comedian.”

Saget approached her and said, “’F**k that. Do not let them change who you are. If you feel good doing it, that’s what you need to be doing.’ He wanted me to know I should just be me.”

I Curse You With Joy is currently available for pre-order, wherever books are sold.
