Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Gets Official Opening Date at Disney World — Everything to Know!

The newly re-themed attraction, which was formerly Splash Mountain, will open in Frontierland located in the Magic Kingdom park

Calling all Princess and the Frog fans! Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is almost here.

The highly-anticipated attraction is officially set to open on Friday, June 28, at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Disney announced on May 12. Park guests can find the new attraction inspired by the 2009 animated film in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom park.

“You’ll join Princess Tiana on an adventure through the bayou as she prepares to host a one-of-a-kind celebration during Mardi Gras season where everyone is welcome,” Sarah Riles, Vice President at Magic Kingdom Park, said of the new ride.  “Along the way, you will see some familiar faces, make new friends and travel through the bayou into the next chapter of Tiana’s story.”

She adds that the ride's signature “thrilling” 50-foot drop will keep park guests on their toes as they “enjoy original music and some familiar tunes from the beloved movie.”

The attraction’s opening date comes nearly four years after the company first announced that Splash Mountain would be reimagined with the new Disney princess theme at both Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California.

Fans started getting excited when they saw a water tower pop up overnight in June 2023 amid the transformation. While the ride will be entirely re-themed, the classic log flume's format, familiar to fans of Splash Mountain, will remain the same for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

In a press release from Disney in 2020, the company explained that its Imagineers had been working on the “inclusive” rebranding since 2019.

“The re-theming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today,” the release explained at the time. “The new concept is inclusive – one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.”

The announcement came after Splash Mountain began receiving increased criticism for its theme, which is based on the controversial 1946 Disney film Song of the South. Multiple petitions on the site Change.org called attention to the movie's problematic portrayal of the post-Civil War South, including racist stereotypes.

One petition titled “Re-theme Splash Mountain to Princess and the Frog” received over 21,384 signatures upon closing.

The petition read in part: “Disney parks should be a home for all to enjoy regardless of race, age, whatever your background may be . . . While the ride is considered a beloved classic, its history and storyline are steeped in extremely problematic and stereotypical racist tropes from the 1946 film Song of the South. There is a huge need for diversity in the parks and this could help fill that need."
