There's a Chance Bella Ramsey Won't Return as Ellie in "The Last of Us" Season 2 — Here's Why

While there are only three episodes of The Last of Us out right now, the critically-acclaimed series has already been greenlit for a second season. Based on the PlayStation video game franchise of the same name, The Last of Us follows Joel and Ellie, who have survived a deadly zombie apocalypse. Joel is hired to bring 14-year-old Ellie out of the restrictive quarantine zone she had been staying in and take her across the country. Meanwhile, he attempts to track down and reunite with his brother to hopefully bring him back to safety.

Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey play Joel and Ellie, respectively. While Ellie is 14 on the show, Bella is actually 19 IRL. This has led fans of the video game to theorize that she might not return for season two of the HBO hit series, which will likely be inspired by the second game in the franchise.

Per Forbes, The Last of Us II picks up five years after the events of The Last of Us take place. This means Ellie is 19 in the second installment, and although the actress who plays her is 19 off-screen, she still looks fairly young. Her hair and makeup in the upcoming season could change to help her look older, or HBO could likely pull a Stranger Things and use CGI technology, but no plans have been revealed just yet.

However, Bella took to Twitter to share her eagerness for the season 2 renewal on January 29. "I FORGOT ABOUT TWITTER FOR A SECOND but you heard about season two right? I’m taking a ride with my best frienddddd (again) :) #TheLastOfUsHBO," she wrote.

A fan responded to her message, asking "are you taking a ride with your best friend (joel) again though. ARE YOU," to which she responded with a series of awkward emojis.

Hopefully, this means she'll reprise her role as Ellie, but HBO has yet to announce any casting decisions for The Last of Us' new chapter.
