“Teen Acting Lab of Elmira” to perform first public show

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The “Teen Acting Lab of Elmira” – also known as TALE – is getting ready for its first show on Tuesday May 21st at Steele Memorial Library. The “actor’s showcase” featuring skits and monologues will run from 6 to 7pm. The show is free and open to the public.

The acting lab is led by actor and educator Tim Collins. 7 to 12th grade students from different schools meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm at the Steele Library on 101 E. Church Street.

“The Teen Acting Lab of Elmira is all about creating a laboratory where kids can come and learn fundamental acting and public speaking techniques and playwriting skills to create their own characters and monologues and scenes,” Collins said.

Students have been honing their acting chops since February when the lab first got started. They are just days away from performing in front of an audience for the first time.

“This is TALE’s first production. We’re going to have three this year,” Collins said. “This is a kind of wonderful evening where kids get to show off monologues and some of the improv games that they’ve learned, public speaking skills, practicing connecting with audiences and eye contact and projection and all the essential things that a performer needs. Some of these kids who’ve never done a play before, are new to acting and performance and they’re just doing an amazing job.”

“This class has been really fun. I can’t count how many times I’ve died of laughter,” said 7th grader Brenna Hurrington.

“It has been really fun, I really enjoy it” said 12th grader August Fieno.

“The antics we get into during certain skits are very funny,” said 8th grader Finn O’Donoghue.

“It’s really fun, definitely a great way to get your energy out at the end of the day,” added 10th grader Rose LaFrameoise.

“I like that I just get to be myself and be silly” added 12th grader Kaito Green.

“How does it feel to act? Great question,” said 11th grader David Hansen. “It’s like stepping into somebody else’s shows. You see things from their perspective instead of your own. It’s a very, very new way of thinking.”
