Taylor Swift’s Trainer Reveals Her ‘Really Hard’ Eras Tour Workout Routine

You need to have major stamina and strength to perform 40 songs worth of music and choreography multiple times a week, as Taylor Swift did on the Eras Tour’s US run last year. And while Swift gave us a peek into her Eras Tour cardio routine last year — which involved daily running on the treadmill while singing her entire setlist — her trainer recently went into even more detail on what the pop star did to get her body ready for the physical stress of the tour.

According to Kirk Myers, founder of Dogpound Gym in NYC and LA and Swift’s trainer since the 1989 days, Swift’s Eras Tour workout routine was no joke. “It’s really hard, some people would probably throw up or have to lay down on the floor if they trained like her,” he said in a new interview with Vogue. “Her work ethic is just incredible,” added Myers — not shocking from the woman who just released a surprise double album of 31 songs, less than a year after putting out two re-releases. Swift is many things, but lazy is not one of them.

Swift and Myers approached her workout schedule like a pro athlete, with “off-season” workouts when she was home (not touring) and “in-season” workout when she was on tour. (Maybe Swift’s NFL boyfriend can relate?) “When she’s not touring, we’re in the gym up to six days a week for sometimes two hours a day,” Myers said. While in the gym, she focused on strength, conditioning, and core strength. Cardio (like that singing-on-the-treadmill workout) was done on Swift’s own time.

“In-season” workouts were no walk in the park either. Swift kept working out “during the entire tour,” Myers said, averaging two workouts a week. “In-season training was more about maintenance, and so it was more like stability, mobility, biomechanics,” he explained, in addition to recovery techniques Myers developed with a chiropractor.

Swift’s dedication clearly impressed Myers, who’s also trained celebs like Hugh Jackman, Karlie Kloss, and Kaia Gerber. Talking about the intensity of each Eras Tour show, Myer said, “Imagine doing that three, four days in a row and then you finally have a few off days and you’re still showing up to gym. That’s Taylor.”

He also described Swift as “the most resilient person I have ever met,” with her determination translating in and out of the gym. “It’s super-inspiring to see her consistently overcome obstacles and become better and stronger in the end,” Myers explained. “I give her a difficult exercise or challenging workout, not only is she able to complete and push through it—but she also perseveres, moving forward into the next exercise.”

And while Myers didn’t get into specifics about the exercises he put Swift through, he did give a tip for fans looking to strengthen their abs like Taylor: “One thing that’s important to focus on when you’re working on your core strength is actually breathing,” he said. “I know it’s outside the box, but fully breathing through workouts helps strengthen your core.” Swift won’t make it through her setlist without plenty of oxygen, and you need it to push through that plank or Pilates class too.
