Tamaqua student preparing for music career

TAMAQUA, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Music and community service are in the heart of a senior at Tamaqua Area High School. She was recently awarded two scholarships for college as she prepares for a music career.

Every year, the Schuylkill County Chorus awards a scholarship for potential music majors. This year, Shaina Ristila is the recipient.

“One day, I walked into chorus first period and our choir Director was just like ‘Ok, we have a winner’ and I was just so shocked almost I didn’t expect to win,” Shaina said.

Shaina says she plans to put that money toward books in college. Singing is not her only talent. She also plays the clarinet in the school band.

It doesn’t end there. She is also learning to play the piano. Those instrumental talents lead to a second scholarship.

“Anything Goes” youth addition kicks off

“I was also the recipient this year of our county band scholarship, so I have two $500 scholarships, which will help tremendously a combined $1,000, especially when you’re in college. They can really help you out,” Shaina explained.

A scholarship is always helpful to college students, but it’s extra special for Shaina because she got it while doing the two things she loves.

“I’ve been into music just about my whole life on and off church choir starting when I was young, but I joined the band when I was in fourth grade. I’ve been playing clarinet for nine years now,” Shaina added.

She encourages students to participate in whatever they are passionate about because they can learn valuable lessons from it.

“I feel that having extracurriculars or being involved in music can definitely strengthen your academics because it teaches you discipline,” Shaina continued.

In her free time, Shaina likes to give back to her community in many ways

“Sometimes on the weekends, if I’m free on a Saturday, I’ll volunteer down at our American Legion in town. They have a bingo every Saturday do some community service or hang out with friends,” Shaina stated.

Shaina will be attending Lebanon Valley College where she will study music education.

Shaina also says she would not be where she is today without the support of her family, friends, and, staff members at Tamaqua Area High School.

Here’s to you Shaina!
