Sydney Sweeney Admits to Actively Fueling Glen Powell Dating Rumors to Boost Anyone But You 's Popularity

Remember those dating rumors about Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell that started circulating just when they were about to begin promotions for Anyone But You? Well, it turns out Sydney Sweeney was the mastermind behind them all — kind of.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Sydney Sweeney admitted to fueling and semi-orchestrating rumors of an offscreen romance with her Anyone But You costar Glen Powell to help boost the film's popularity, and, well, it worked. Anyone But You soared to a staggering $218 million worldwide, a remarkable feat considering its modest $8 million box office debut. The speculation surrounding Sweeney and Powell's chemistry undoubtedly contributed to this triumph.

Speaking to NYT, Powell admitted the audience's intrigue helped propel the film to its success and implied that we all had to thank Sweeney for fanning the flames. “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That's people wanting what's on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”

Sweeney, who also served as an executive producer alongside her current fiancé Jonathan Davino, added: "I was on every call. I was in text group chats. I was probably keeping everybody over at Sony marketing and distribution awake at night because I couldn't stop with ideas."

One of the said ideas was leaning into the off-screen romance rumors, which she noticed was one of the aspects that most intrigued the audiences in the lead-up to the film's release, especially after Powell broke up with his long-term girlfriend, Gigi Paris.

"I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film, because, at the end of the day, they're the ones who created the entire narrative," Sweeney admitted in the new interview. As they revealed to NYT, "the speculation played out exactly as they intended." Touché.

Previously, Sweeney had addressed the rumors, saying the audience "wants it," so "it's fun to give it to 'em," which tracks with what we know now. Powell, on the other hand, called them "disorienting and unfair." (Excuse us, sir, but we are the ones disoriented!)

Recently, Sydney Sweeney poked fun at the Glen Powell affair rumors on Saturday Night Live. "I'd say the craziest rumor I've seen is that while I was filming Anyone But You, I was having an affair with my co-star Glen Powell," the actor said in her opening monologue.

“That's obviously not true,” she continued. "Me and my fiancé produced the movie together, and he was there the entire shoot, and I just want to let everyone know that he's the man of my dreams, and we're still together and stronger than ever. He even came here tonight to support me. Can we cut to him?" The camera then cut to Glen Powell.

What can we say? They got us all.
