Sutton Foster is coming back to the boards.

The two-time Tony Award winning theater vet and Younger star will be back on Broadway this summer, leading the revival of the beloved Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer musical Once Upon a Mattress.

News of the production was announced on Friday, May 17. Previews begin Wednesday, July 31 at the Hudson Theatre in New York City with an opening night set for Monday, Aug. 12. The limited engagement is currently scheduled through Nov. 30.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Princess and the Pea — with a book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer — Once Upon A Mattress follows the charmingly brash Winnifred the Woebegone as she competes for the hand of Prince Dauntless, after his demanding mother Queen Aggravain insisted he must marry a "true" princess before anyone else in their kingdom can marry.

Foster will play Winnifred, a role originated in the 1959 Broadway production by Carol Burnett. The actress follows in the footsteps of stars who have played the role in various adaptations on stage and on screen over the years, like Sarah Jessica Parker (in the first and last Broadway revival in 1996) and Tracey Ullman (in the 2005 film).

This will be the second time Foster has stepped into Winnifred's shoes. She played the role earlier this year at New York City Center’s Encores!.

That production — newly adapted by Emmy Award winner Amy Sherman-Palladino, who Foster worked with on Bunheads — is making the transfer to Broadway here. Its directed by Tony Award nominee and Lear deBessonet (Into The Woods), and will feature choreography by Lorin Latarro (The Who’s Tommy).

After Broadway, Once Upon a Mattress, with Foster, will move to Los Angeles for a four-week engagement at Center Theatre Group's Ahmanson Theatre. Performances will run there from Dec. 10 through Jan. 5, 2025.

Other cast members will be announced at a future time. The Encores! cast included Michael Urie (Prince Dauntless), Harriet Harris (Queen Aggravain), Nikki Renée Daniels (Lady Larken), J. Harrison Ghee (Jester), Cheyenne Jackson (Sir Harry), Francis Jue (Wizard) and David Patrick Kelly (King Sextimus the Silent).

Once Upon a Mattress is known for songs like "Shy" and "in a Little While," which have become part of the American musical theater lexicon.

Earlier this month, Foster wrapped up her run as Mrs. Lovett in the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street opposite Aaron Tveit. Prior to that, she co-starred in the 2022 revival of The Music Man with Hugh Jackman.

Tickets for Once upon a Mattress will go on sale later this month.
