In 1997, a group of teenagers in British Columbia murdered a 14-year-old girl named Reena Virk. In 2005, those teenagers would become the subject of author Rebecca Godfrey’s book Under the Bridge. Nearly 20 years later, that book is the source material behind Hulu’s latest true-crime drama, also named Under the Bridge, and starring Zola and Daisy Jones and the Six actress Riley Keough as the late Godfrey herself. Her co-star, Killers of the Flower Moon actress Lily Gladstone, plays a fictionalized cop named Cam Bentland. Together, they lead an ensemble cast of mostly young women and girls, each facing personal upheaval in the wake of such a devastating crime.
As Under the Bridge show creator Quinn Shephard told ELLE.com in an exclusive first look at the series, “For a story about such a brutal act of violence, the actual storytelling [in the book] had a lot of gentleness to it, and it captured these very universal truths about adolescence that really spoke to me. It was a story that had such a startling empathy for everyone involved and everyone whose lives were touched by the crime and also for Reena herself.”
