‘Stop wasting money’: TikToker claims people are using their fridge drawers all wrong

A TikToker is trying to help people save money — and prevent food waste — by teaching them the proper way to use their crisper drawers.

Sustainability advocate @shelbizleee gained over 460,000 views, 31,000 likes and 6,200 saves when she uploaded her food waste prevention hack to her account.

Now, much like the TikToker using Dollar Tree food to meal prep for the week, @shelbizleee‘s hack is helping people stretch their groceries — and thus, their money.

“This is the best way to store food properly and stop wasting money,” @shelbizleee says in the video.

She then demonstrates the proper settings for the fruit and vegetable drawers that can help keep produce fresh longer.

How do crisper drawers work?

According to Whirlpool, crisper drawers work by controlling the airflow that enters and exits the bin, which means you can toggle between high and low humidity levels.

“When the crisper is set to ‘high humidity,’ airflow is cut off from the drawer. This allows produce to be stored in a controlled environment to maintain moisture,” the website explains.

“On the other hand, when the crisper is set to ‘low humidity,’ the opposite happens. Moisture and air escape freely through a vent in the bin, exposing the produce to the air outside.”

Whirlpool explains that whether the drawer is set to a high or low setting, the humidity in the drawer is generated by whatever you store inside of it.

“By adjusting the flow of air into the crisper drawer, you control the rate at which humidity escapes.”

How much food waste is there in the United States?

Feeding America reports that, each year, 119 billion pounds of food is wasted in the U.S. “That equates to 130 billion meals and more than $408 billion in food thrown away each year. Shockingly, nearly 40% of all food in America is wasted.”

Meanwhile, 34 million people face hunger in the United States.

‘I would just slide them around randomly and hope for the best’

TikTokers were thankful to @shelbizleee for the helpful tip.

“I honestly didn’t even realize those were open/close slides I would just slide them around randomly and hope for the best,” commented @myusername.543.

“Why aren’t we taught things like this 😨” wrote @littleliion8.

“Whatttt!! Thanks for sharing and help to #ReduceFoodWaste 👏‼️” commented @sparefoodco.

However, some fridge owners shared they use their crisper drawers in a whole other way.

“i put condiments in there 😭😭 it’s chaotic but if my veggies aren’t staring me in the face i will lose them,” shared @midwestblow.
