After working together for more than three years on Only Murders in the Building, Steve Martin and Martin Short have built quite a special bond with Selena Gomez.

“I think it just gets deeper and deeper and deeper,” Short, 74, tells PEOPLE of his friendship with Gomez, 31. “She is so lovely as a human, she's so remarkable as a talent, and she just has an aura and this lovely spirit.

“Our friendship grows and grows,” he adds.

And when it comes to her professionalism, her costars — who have been friends, themselves, for 40 years — both give shining reviews.

“We didn't really know Selena, we didn't know what we're getting into,” Martin, 78, says.  “I knew she has a fabulous personality, she's very smart. But she is never late.”

“No,” Short agrees.

“And that's a very big deal when you're making a movie, if people are standing around like, ‘Where is so-and-so?,’" Martin continues. "She is on the mark...We all march down the steps together. It's fabulous. But it gives you an insight into her own personality and professionalism.”

Short previously sung Gomez’s praises when talking about their experience on set, telling PEOPLE in 2023 that the actress is “always on time, always knows her lines. So good, so talented, such a pro — it's fabulous."

Like Martin, he also admitted that he wasn’t sure what to expect ahead of working with the Wizards of Waverly Place star.

"The first day we shot, I had never met Selena. Because of COVID, we'd only Zoomed," Short remembered. "And I was driving to work and I thought, I wonder what Selena's could be like? I mean, she could be a nightmare. She could be a pop princess nightmare."

However, his worries were quickly put to rest.

"Right away — from the first second we started to the makeup room — it was, like, fabulous,” he said.

The trio has joined forces on the popular Hulu series as Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short) and Mabel (Gomez) for three seasons. They are currently working on a fourth installment.

Following the season three finale in which Jane Lynch’s character Sazz Pataki gets shot, the new installment will see the team “searching for answers about who killed Sazz, if they were actually aiming for Charles and why anyone would want to kill either of them,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

Martin and Short recently took a break from portraying their true crime podcast-loving characters to star alongside one another in Wells Fargo's new campaign for their Active Cash Credit Card. While the funny spots see Short picking up the bill on various outings to take advantage of the card's 2% cash back feature, Martin assures PEOPLE that in real life it's “very, very even” between the longtime friends.

The first three seasons of Only Murders in the Building are now streaming on Hulu.
