Steve Martin and Martin Short Highlight Star-Studded Diane Keaton AFI Tribute

Diane Keaton recently received the American Film Institute’s 45th Life Achievement Award. Hollywood’s biggest stars showed up to the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles to celebrate the life and career of the legendary actress.

The Martin and Martin hour

Steve Martin and Martin Short kicked off the festivities at the AFI tribute. The two comedians got the event off to a hilarious start, saying, “We’re here tonight to honor actress, director, and climate change denier Diane Keaton.” While Steve and Martin dominated the beginning of the show, they also returned later for a romantic serenade. Sitting on both sides of Keaton, the guys sang, “The Way You Look Tonight,” before leaning in and kissing each other.

Mandatory Trump joke

There were plenty of other stars on hand, like Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino, and Lisa Kudrow. As is tradition, any time there are that many Hollywood stars at an event, there is a one Trump joke minimum requirement. Jane Fonda had the honor this time, saying, “So tonight, in her honor, I’m wearing white. It’s not just the color of Donald Trump’s cabinet.”

Most of the night was full of people saying wonderful things about Keaton, and some not-so-wonderful things. Her Annie Hall co-star Woody Allen jokingly said, “She’s never succumbed to any face work or anything. She’s very uncompromising. She prefers to look old.”

Keaton sings the night away

At the end of the night, the woman of the hour went onstage to thank everyone. But the idea of getting up and speaking in front of everyone seemed ridiculous to her. Keaton said, “Who cares what I have to say. I mean, it’s all been said! I just feel horrible about the fact that I have to do this. And I have no interest in it whatsoever.” So the legendary actress decided to sing a song before gracefully leaving the stage.
