Steve Carell and John Krasinski have an “Office” reunion in new “IF” promo

Carell voices Blue, an imaginary friend, in Krasinski’s new directorial project.

The Scranton boys are back in town.

In a new promo for his directorial project IF, John Krasinski reunites with his The Office costar Steve Carell for the first time in years. “Reunited and it feeeeels so gooooood!” the Quiet Place filmmaker wrote on social media.

“[Carell] happens to be a dear friend,” Krasinski says in the video. “We actually worked together on this little thing a long time ago.”

The video cuts to footage of Krasinski and Carell embracing in a recording studio. “So good to see you,” Krasinski says. “Oh my Lord,” Carell responds. “I was just telling you guys — has it been years?” Krasinski asks. “I’m glad we’re getting it,” Carell jokes as he points to the camera capturing their reunion. “This is so intimate.”

“I just love that this is the fifth take and you did great on this,” Krasinski jokes back as Carell rushes back to the door for a do-over of their greeting. “So anyway, I haven’t seen Steve in geez, it’s gotta be —.” The filmmaker takes a sip of water as Carell bursts back into the room and shouts, “Oh my gosh!” causing Krasinski to do an exaggerated spit take for the camera. “You look very nice, by the way,” Krasinski comments. “You do too. Anyway…” Carell responds.

IF explores a world where children’s imaginary friends (or IFs, for short) are real. In the film, Carell plays the main IF named Blue — not to be confused with Bloo, the primary imaginary friend on Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, which explores a similar concept. “Steve's one of the most talented people on the planet,” Krasinski told Entertainment Weekly in December. “So whether I had ever worked with him before or not, I would've been gunning for him because I just had his voice in my head when I was writing Blue."

Krasinski also said of the character, "[Blue] is not going to defend anyone — he's just going to give you giant hugs and be adorable. And what better person to give giant hugs and be adorable than Steve Carell."

Carell and Krasinski starred on The Office together for seven seasons from 2005 to 2011. Carell’s Michael Scott departed the series in its seventh season, leaving Krasinski’s Jim Halpert as the primary protagonist for its eighth and ninth seasons. Carell returned for a brief cameo in the series finale in 2013.

Additionally, Carell virtually guested on Krasinski’s pandemic web series Some Good News in 2020.

IF also stars Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, Louis Gossett Jr., Matt Damon, George Clooney, Maya Rudolph, Bradley Cooper, Amy Schumer, Blake Lively, Awkwafina, Richard Jenkins, Krasinski, and his wife Emily Blunt. The film hits theaters May 17.
