Stephen Colbert adds impeachment joke to CNN's 'fake news' ad

    Nick Paschal
    Supervising Producer, Yahoo Entertainment
    October 25, 2017

With Donald Trump tweeting about people believing fake news, CNN recently released an ad defending itself against his claims. On The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the late-night host thought the CNN ad didn’t go far enough.

The commercial CNN has been airing has an image of a red apple with a voice speaking over it. “This is an apple,” the voice says. “Some people might try to tell you that it’s a banana. They might scream banana, banana, banana over and over and over again. They might put banana in all caps. You might even start to believe that this is a banana. But it’s not. This is an apple.” At the end, the apple disappears, and the words “Facts First” replace it on the white background.

While Colbert seemed to like the ad, he thought it could be improved slightly. So the late-night host showed a new and improved version of the commercial. It began the same way as CNN’s, with an image of an apple and a voice saying, “This is an apple. Some people might try to tell you that it’s a banana.” But that’s where this ad differed from the original. The voice continued: “Sarah Huckabee Sanders might get on TV and say, ‘Banana fanna fo fanna, fee fi mo manna, banana,’ even though your question was about tax returns.”

In the end, the updated ad had some more controversial fruit. “But this isn’t a banana. It’s an apple. A really stupid apple. Now, orange you ready to impeach?” the voice said as the apple was replaced by an orange and then a peach.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
