Marvel’s longtime rival, DC Comics, tweeted out its thoughts on how much Lee meant to superheroes and comics.

Lee had been involved with Marvel Comics since the early 1940s, serving as the editor in chief from 1941 to 1942, and then again from 1945 to 1972. From 1942 to 1945, Lee served in the United States Army, repairing communication equipment. The comic-book icon continued writing while he was editor in chief, writing for a host of comic books series, including the Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men and several more. In his later years, Lee made cameo appearances in several Marvel movies, including Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Sony’s Spider-Man films and Fox’s X-Men films.

Several actors who have been Marvel superheroes tweeted out their thoughts on the impact Lee had on them and others.

Yahoo commenters had nothing but praise for the former editor in chief of Marvel Comics, sharing stories of how he inspired those around him.

“I remember buying comics for 12 cents and drawing pictures from them,” said one commenter. “Now my son loves Marvel and hasn’t missed a movie. Thank you Mr. Lee for those memories and its legacy. Condolences to family friends and fans. R.I.P. Stan Lee.”

“I just learned of this while watching TV news,” wrote another. “My son’s love of drawing is a directly link to Mr. Lee comics. R.I.P Mr. Lee.”
