LANSING — Sparrow Health System announced Wednesday it is easing its mask mandate in most public locations of its facilities as COVID-19 infections decline.

The health network said in a press release that no one will be required to wear a mask in public areas of its building, including hallways, cafeterias and most waiting areas.

It added that high levels of immunity and the availability of effective treatments also contributed to the decision.

The policy aligns with Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards, Sparrow officials said.

Visitors and patients are still required to wear a mask when visiting patients, seeking care for respiratory or COVID-19 symptoms including fever, cough, rash or if they live with someone who has COVID-19, according to the release.

Caregivers are required to wear a mask when providing direct care to patients or if they're experiencing respiratory symptoms. Higher-grade N95 masks will still be available for caregivers if they choose.

“The easing of the mask mandate marks a historical milestone,” said Dr. Paul Entler, Sparrow Health System chief clinical officer. “For the past three years, our region has endured much heartache, stress, loss of loved ones, and isolation. I am proud to be part of the Mid-Michigan community and what we stand for with better days ahead.  The easing of mask requirements symbolizes recovery.”

McLaren Health Care Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer Justin Klamerus said the health network is reviewing COVID-19 infections and "other factors" in communities for future changes to its mask mandate. As of Tuesday, McLaren still requires patients and visitors to wear masks in its facilities.

The number of COVID cases reported daily in the United States has dropped by 92% since the peak of the Omicron surge in January 2022, according to federal statistics. COVID deaths have also declined by over 80%, while new COVID-19 hospitalizations are down nearly 80%.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recommends everyone to wear a mask as people can be asymptomatic with COVID-19.
