'South Park' tackles ICE, family separations in Season 23 premiere

South Park has never held back on tackling controversial and sensitive topics, and in its Season 23 premiere on Comedy Central, the long-running animated series is pressing one of the hottest buttons in the current political landscape.

The premiere episode, which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m., will focus on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (aka ICE) and family separations at the border with Mexico.

As seen in the trailer, the episode — titled “Mexican Joker” — finds the Broflovski family accosted by ICE agents, who arrest the parents and take away Kyle and adopted brother Ike (a Canadian). And Eric Cartman was the one who tipped them off about the household harboring an illegal immigrant.

"You can't take our children away from us," Kyle's dad says in the trailer.

Yet they can, as they have in real life, with over 1,000 immigrant children separated from their families.

What happens to the Broflovskis? Comedy Central’s official synopsis teases that “Kyle goes to camp.” He most likely shouldn’t expect to be able to take a shower or brush his teeth, according to reports about the detention centers.

Last year, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone held back from aiming their satirical fire on President Donald Trump. His on-screen persona, Mr. Garrison, was mostly missing last season.

“It was nice for us," Parker told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was nice to not come in and talk about Donald Trump. And I think it was nice for people to watch and go, 'Oh, yeah, there is still comedy outside of f***ing Donald Trump.”

No word on whether Mr. Garrison will appear this season, but it seems at least Trump’s policies, if not the man himself, will once again be targets.

Parker and Stone’s first meeting about the new season went very well, a good sign for things to come.

“You hope when you get back that you laugh a lot, and we did today," Parker said. "I laughed harder today than I have in probably six months."

Stone added, "I'll sleep better tonight. It really is like this big release."

Comedy Central recently renewed South Park for another three seasons through 2022.
