"It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn't written, hadn't produced, or starred in. It was shocking."

Sophie Turner is still reeling from her highly publicized divorce from Joe Jonas.

The 28-year-old actress got candid about the frustrating experience of making countless headlines when news broke that her then-husband had filed to divorce her on Sept. 5, 2023.

"Those were the worst few days of my life,” Turner said in a new interview with British Vogue while promoting her upcoming series, Joan. “I remember I was on set. I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish Joan.”

While Turner was unable to discuss certain details concerning the collapse of their marriage for legal reasons, she previously claimed to have learned about the divorce filing from media coverage of it. Following the news came tabloid stories accusing Turner of being a party girl and questioning her parenting skills.

"It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother," Turner said. "Mum guilt is so real! I just kept having to say to myself, 'None of this is true. You are a good mum, and you’ve never been a partier.'"

She added, "It’s unfathomable the amount of people that will just make shit up and put it up based on a picture. A picture might tell a thousand words, but it’s not my story. It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn’t written, hadn’t produced, or starred in. It was shocking. I’m still in shock."

Despite the backlash she received from some online circles, Turner expressed appreciation for the way many younger fans came to her defense on social media.

"If something like this had happened to me 10 years ago I don’t think I would have had the same support,” she said. "I just feel very lucky to be alive in a time when people are open-minded. Thank f--- for Gen Z."

At the forefront of her mind now is how the divorce proceedings affected the couple’s two infant daughters. “I’m unhappy with the way everything played out, especially when it comes to my children,” Turner said. “They’re the victims in all of this.”

After the Jonas Brothers singer filed for divorce, the couple presented a united front with a joint statement, saying, "We have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage."

However, in the months that followed, Turner sued Jonas for “wrongfully retaining” their children and demanded that she be allowed to return to her home country of England with them. They eventually reached a joint custody agreement, allowing Turner to travel with the children.

Reflecting on their relationship as co-parents, Turner said, "I think we’re doing the best we can. I’m confident that we can figure it out. Joe is a great father to our children, and that’s all that I can ask for.”

The couple began dating in 2016 after the musician messaged her on social media and mutual friends encouraged them to meet. A year later, they announced they were engaged, and they tied married in 2019. They welcomed their first daughter in July 2020, and their second in July 2022.

Describing the whirlwind nature of their relationship, the former Game of Thrones star said, “It was really surreal, like a fever dream.”

She added, “Because he was older than me, I just felt like I was really taken care of, to the point I came back home and didn’t know how to do anything for myself.”

At the same time, Turner said, she felt isolated by life in Los Angeles and then Miami, where the couple relocated after having children. Once she returned to the U.K., she felt comfortably surrounded by her support system of family and friends.

“Now that I’m back home, I’m actually the happiest I’ve been in a really long time,” Turner said. “I’m starting over again, rediscovering what I like to do, who I like to be with.”
