Sophia Bush Reveals When Her Romance With Ashlyn Harris Began & How It Has Nothing To Do With Her Ex

Just this past year, Sophia Bush‘s personal life has taken quite a few trips down the rumor mill. After all, in addition to splitting from her husband, Grant Hughes, soon after their first anniversary together, Bush surprised everyone by starting a relationship with newly single former US soccer player Ashlyn Harris. With so much new information, it’s like the internet was in a frenzy trying to know about her split and newfound love.
Luckily for fans, Bush recently opened up in a candid essay for Glamour that finally set the record straight on what really happened.

The essay, which accompanied a cover of her topless wearing a brown leather jacket and her hands covering her chest, began with her breaking down why her relationship with Hughes was doomed from the start. “In April of 2022 I was close to calling off my wedding. Instead of running away, I doubled down on being a model wife,” she remembered. The pair tied the knot in June 2022.
After a beautiful wedding and a rocky start to their marriage, Bush’s instincts continued creeping in. “I think I knew deep down that I absolutely had made a mistake,” she wrote. “It would take my head and heart a while longer to understand what my bones already knew.”
Shortly after their first anniversary, Bush decided to finally listen to her gut and ask for a divorce. Fortunately, she had plenty of friends at the time for support. “Groups of women in my life started opening up about issues they were going through in their own homes,” she said. “It seemed like every week there were more of us, including Ashlyn, whom I’d first met in 2019 and who was in the process of figuring out her own split from her wife.”
“She’d been such a kind ear for those of us who opened up about our problems during a shared weekend of speaking engagements at a fancy conference in Cannes, and soon it became clear that she needed our ears too,” Bush continued of their growing connection.
As the two continued to get to know each other, Bush (and apparently many of the other friends in the friend group) felt like there was something more between them.
“I didn’t expect to find love in this support system,” Bush, who came out a queer in the essay, admitted. “I don’t know how else to say it other than: I didn’t see it until I saw it. And I think it’s very easy not to see something that’s been in front of your face for a long time when you’d never looked at it as an option and you had never been looked at as an option.”
Soon after, Bush and Harris went on their first date. “That meal was four and a half hours long and truly one of the most surreal experiences of my life thus far,” Bush wrote. How romantic!
So there it is: Bush never cheated on Hughes with Harris, in fact, the two were over long before Bush decided to date Harris in the first place. Not clear enough? Bush spelled it out.
“There were accusations of being a home-wrecker,” she remembered. “The ones who said I’d left my ex because I suddenly realized I wanted to be with women—my partners have known what I’m into for as long as I have (so that’s not it, y’all, sorry!).”
In the end, Bush couldn’t help but gush over her new love. “The way she prioritizes and centers her kids, not only in her life but in the core of her being, is breathtaking to behold,” she said. Harris shares daughter Sloane and son Ocean with her ex-wife Ali Krieger.
“Falling in love with her has sutured some of my own childhood wounds, and made me so much closer to my own mother,” Bush said of Harris. “Seeing Ashlyn choose to not simply survive, but thrive, for her babies has been the most beautiful thing I’ve ever witnessed a friend do. And now I get to love her. How lucky am I?”
