We're getting closer and closer to the premiere ofShe-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and nowTeen Voguehas an exclusive first look of a trailer teasing the return of the iconic '80s mythical warrior princess.

The animated series from DreamWorks Animation Television and Netflix follows the story of Adora, a young orphan who was raised by a group called the Horde. She doesn't know where's from and who her family is, but when she stumbles upon a magic sword that transforms her into She-Ra, the Princess of Power, her whole world changes. It's soon revealed to her that the Horde is actually an evil army trying to conquer the planet — so she leaves behind her former life, joining the Rebellion and a new group of friends to forge her own path in life.

"It was a really exciting opportunity for me because it's about this female hero with such a complicated and interesting backstory," executive producer Noelle Stevenson tells Teen Vogue. "And also, one of the few legacy cartoons from the '80s that really showcases a cast of female characters. Not just female heroes, but female villains and female comic relief. Kind of the whole spectrum of characters."

Beyond getting to know Adora/She-Ra, voiced by Aimee Carrero, the show will also introduce us to a flurry of other characters. There's Catra (AJ Michalka), who Adora grew up with in the Horde. So when Adora leaves the evil army, there's sure to be plenty of tension between the two former best friends. Glimmer (Karen Fukuhara) and Bow (Marcus Scribner) are two young rebels, a princess with the power of teleportation and an expert archer respectively. And Noelle adds that there's a slew of other princesses with distinct powers and personalities that Adora meets on her way to take down the Horde.

Noelle and the team behind the remake had a couple of things in mind while updating the character and She-Ra's animation for today's world, including fleshing her out beyond a static, one-dimensional character. Noelle specifically wanted to make Adora feel like a real person, even if becoming a powerful warrior with the help of an enchanted sword is pretty fantastical.

"I also think, just as somebody who is this young woman who's been sort of catapulted into a position of great power and a great destiny, that there was something that I really wanted to get into with her internal life," she says. "Like, who she was trying to be. How she saw herself, and sort of the fear and anxiety that comes along with that. Of trying to be the best person you possibly can. So that's very central to her character."

But as with many recent reboots and remakes, She-Ra has already stirred up some controversy because of her redesign. Some male fans criticized the new look when Noelle shared some first-look images of the new She-Ra, upset that the princess wasn't as scantily-clad as the original. She acknowledges that the team "had our work cut out for us," but that many of the changes were "character based."

"We did decide to make her younger, again, because she had sort of led this sheltered life up until now," Noelle says. "To find that line in the middle between who Adora is at the start of the show, and sort of what she's trying to be, as this aspirational hero. So, that was what we were sort of thinking of when we were designing her. I really hope that everybody tunes in to watch the show and sees what we're doing with her, because as much as we love the original She-Ra, this version of her... I hope that she can also make that place in people's hearts and that they'll grow to love her just as much."

In the teaser trailer for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, a mysterious voice calls for Adora, telling the young hero that "balance must be restored." We get to watch as she grabs hold of the mystical sword, becomes enveloped in a brilliant light, and transforms into She-Ra for the first time.
