After a short hiatus following its Feb. 3 episode hosted by Ayo Edebiri, "Saturday Night Live" returns Feb. 24 with controversial host pick Shane Gillis.

What has people talking about Gillis? The stand-up comedian was supposed to join the "SNL" cast as a permanent member in 2019 but was let go before he could make his debut for using an anti-Asian slur on his podcast.

The acclaimed comedy series announced Gillis as the guest host alongside musical guest 21 Savage on its Instagram earlier this month. Here's everything you need to know about this weekend's much-awaited show.

Who is Shane Gillis?

Gillis, a Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, native, got his start in comedy in 2016 after winning Philly’s Funniest at Helium Comedy Club. That same year, he launched his podcast “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast" alongside comedian Matt McCusker. In 2019, he was named an "Up Next Comic" at Comedy Central’s Clusterfest in San Francisco.

Self-described as a “comedian who pushes boundaries," the 36-year-old released his first comedy special, "Shane Gillis: Live in Austin," on YouTube in 2021. His second stand-up special, "Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs," released to Netflix in September 2023.
