September 17 Is Officially 'Squid Game' Day in LA

Los Angeles has officially designated September 17 Squid Game Day, celebrating the inaugural release of the buzzy Netflix TV series that took the world by storm in 2021.
The news was announced by Korean-American congressman John Lee, who shared that the city council passed the resolution due to the global impact of the K-drama. According to Yonhap News, this could be the first-ever commemoration day in the United States dedicated to a TV show.
The resolution noted that Squid Game "was the first ever Korean series on Netflix to reach number 1 in the U.S., breaking the barrier that many foreign language shows face with western audiences simply because of subtitles." Since its premiere, the show has won multiple accolades at shows like the Emmy Awards. The resolution additionally read, "Squid Game marks another victory in the fight to grow representation of the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community in film and entertainment, exposing audiences to Korean culture and traditions while paving the way for other AAPI communities to also have their stories told."
A ceremony will take place this Friday in front of LA City Hall with director Hwang Dong-hyuk and actor Lee Jung-jae in attendance.
