See how this young woman singlehandedly converted a bus into a tiny home
If you think magic school buses are a work of fiction, Deyana Walker’s (@the.skoolie.teacher) converted minibus will change your mind. On this episode of Dream Big, Live Small, Walker gives viewers a tour of her impeccably designed tiny home on wheels.
After going through a breakup, Walker took a leap of faith and purchased an old minibus to transform into a traveling sanctuary. While Walker doesn’t feel that bus living will be her “end all be all,” it was something she wanted to experience as a young person with no major obligations holding her back.
“From start to finish, it took me about 11 months to fully convert the bus,” Walker tells In The Know. After painting the bus’s exterior light brown, Walker added a landscape mural to each side that she reproduced from a sticker belonging to her mother. A hitch attached to the back of the bus conveniently holds propane tanks that power its generator, stove, and heater. Above the hitch, a window showcases a collection of stickers from national parks Walker has visited.
Moving on, Walker gives viewers a tour of the bus’s interior, beginning with a shower, just big enough to fit one person. No space goes wasted in the bus’s multi-purpose main area, which doubles as a kitchen and lounge space.
Walker’s bright and airy kitchen includes a 3-burner stove and oven on one side of the bus and prepping station on the other, which has a deep sink and a butcher block countertop free of clutter, thanks to the spice rack on the adjacent wall and hanging fruit basket.
While the quaint seating fixture next to the kitchen area may be small, Walker manages to get a lot of mileage out of it. In addition to eating, working, and hanging out, Walker can extend the couch into a spare bed for guests. A small storage nook next to the seating area for Walker’s work materials and the diesel heater below provide an extra cozy atmosphere.
In keeping with the relaxing ambiance, Walker enjoys spending time doing yoga or watching the sunset on the 8-foot-long roof deck while the three adjacent flexible solar panels on top of the bus help power its battery.
The space between the main living space and the bedroom offers a generous amount of storage. A large pantry above a mini refrigerator and freezer is situated across from an incredible 3-foot closet with double doors Walker built herself.
Walker’s dog, Honcho, even gets his own space beneath her full-size bed, which features a headboard she built to accommodate more storage. No matter how much time Walker spends living on the road in her rolling abode, she’ll definitely have some great stories to tell!
