Sixty years after its original release and the Mary Poppins cast is still remembered fondly. This Disney classic came out in 1964 and went on to win five Academy Awards, including for the song "Chim Chim Cher-ee."

Set in London, the Mary Poppins cast follows the Banks family, who are in dire need of a nanny to care for their mischievous children, Jane and Michael. Enter Mary Poppins, portrayed by the incomparable Julie Andrews, a mysterious and magical nanny who arrives on the scene with her talking umbrella and bottomless carpet bag.

With the help of her friend Bert, a charming chimney sweep played by Dick Van Dyke, Mary Poppins takes the children on extraordinary adventures filled with whimsy and wonder, teaching them valuable life lessons along the way. Through a series of magical escapades, the Banks family learns the importance of love, laughter, and cherishing the moments that truly matter.

Born on October 1, 1935, in Surrey, England, Julie Andrews played the starring role as Mary Poppins, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Andrews recalled during the two-hour Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic CBS special, that she connected with co-star Van Dyke right from the start. “He was young, fit as can be, and really gorgeous to look at,” she said. “I'd never made a movie before, and I'd given birth to my lovely daughter Emma nearly six weeks earlier, and I quickly realized that I had better pull my socks up and get in shape.” I found it pretty daunting, I can tell you. Dick could not have been kinder, more genuinely sweet and helpful. I like to think that we did bond instantly."

After being in the Mary Poppins cast, Andrews immediately starred in another popular film, The Sound of Music. And from their her career continued to take off. As a singer, actress and author, Andrews has received numerous accolades throughout her career spanning over seven decades. In fact, in 2000, she was made a dame by Queen Elizabeth II for her services to the performing arts.

She has starred in all three of the Princes Diaries movies. Plus, she has put her famous voice to good work, starring in the second and third Shrek films, the Despicable Me series, as well as box-office hit Aquaman (2018). On the Netflix sensation Bridgerton, she plays the voice of Lady Whistledown, and  earned two Emmy nominations in 2021 and 2022 for her role.

Born on December 13, 1925, in West Plains, Missouri, Dick Van Dyke played Bert, the affable chimney sweep and friend of Mary Poppins.

Prior to his role in the Mary Poppins cast, Dick Van Dyke gained fame for his work on The Dick Van Dyke Show, a popular television sitcom from 1961 to 1966. He also received a Tony Award in 1961 for best actor in a musical for originating the role of Albert Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway.

After Mary Poppins, he continued having a successful film career including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) The Comic (1969), Dick Tracy (1990) Night at the Museum (2006) and 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns.

He also had a successful TV career including The New Dick Van Dyke Show (1971-1974), The Van Dyke Show (1988), Diagnosis: Murder (1993–2001) and Murder 101 (2006–2008).

Van Dyke's has won many awards including a Grammy and five Emmy Awards. He was named a Disney Legend in 1998 and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2020.

He has four children and has been married twice.

David Tomlinson as Mr. Banks

David Tomlinson was born on May 7, 1917, in Oxfordshire, England. He played the role of George Banks, the strict and emotionally distant father of Jane and Michael Banks. Tomlinson's portrayal of Mr. Banks resonated with audiences, capturing both his stern demeanor and underlying vulnerability.

Prior to the Mary Poppins cast, he appeared in several movies including Quiet Wedding (1941) and Pimpernel Smith (1941).

After Mary Poppins, he continued to appear in other successful Disney films including The Love Bug (1969) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971). He also appeared in several TV shows including Hawaii Five-O. He retired in the early 1980s after a long career in acting. He passed away in 2000.

Glynis Johns as Mrs. Banks Mary Poppins Cast

Glynis Johns was born on October 5, 1923, in Pretoria, South Africa. She played the role of Winifred Banks, the kind-hearted and free-spirited wife of George Banks and the suffragette mother of her two children.

Prior to being in the Mary Poppins cast, she was in several movies including Frieda (1947), Miranda (1948) and Mad About Men (1954). After being in the Mary Poppins cast, she was in several movies including Under Milk Wood (1971), The Ref (1994), While You Were Sleeping (1995) and Superstar (1999).

Johns died in 2024, at the age of 100. She was married and divorced four times and had one child.

Karen Dotrice as Jane Banks

Karen Dotrice was born on November 9, 1955, in Guernsey, England.  Dotrice portrayed Jane Banks, the spirited and adventurous daughter in the Banks family. Before being in the Mary Poppins cast, she made her acting debut in The Three Lives of Thomasina (1963).

Following her success in Mary Poppins, Dotrice continued to act in various films and television shows, including Disney's The Gnome-Mobile (1967) and the series Voyagers and Young Blades. Most recently, she was in the 2018 movie Mary Poppins Returns and the 2023 film Never Alone for Christmas.

Matthew Garber was born on March 25, 1956, in London, England. Garber portrayed Michael Banks, the mischievous and imaginative son of the Banks family. Prior to his role in Mary Poppins, Garber made his acting debut in the film The Three Lives of Thomasina, alongside Karen Dotrice (his “sister” in Mary Poppins).

He also appeared in Disney's The Gnome-Mobile alongside Dotrice. In fact, all three of his movie appearances were in films that also starred Karen Dotrice.

Tragically, Garber passed away in London in 1977 at the age of 21. He had contracted hepatitis, which eventually spread to his pancreas and caused his death.
