See St. Joseph: Races, performances and more

Apr. 11—St. Joseph has several performances, races and activities to keep residents entertained in the coming days. Check out what's happening in this week's edition of See St. Joseph.

To start the weekend, Felix Street Pub, 516 Felix St., is welcoming Duke Oursler and his band, The American Dream. With honesty, authenticity and wit, the band belts out the stories of America's Heartland. Their live performance is a mix of original country rock music as well as a few select covers. The show starts at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

With the warm weather here, St. Joseph residents may be looking for a way to get out for a little exercise. Luckily, Friends of the Animal Shelter has just the solution with its 10th annual Run or Walk for the Paws 5k. This dog-friendly race will feature several local pet-related booths for participants to browse as well as a kid's activity booth. Awards will be given for first, second and third place for male and female runners. Those who plan on bringing a dog should be sure that they're friendly with people and other dogs and are updated on their rabies vaccinations. The race will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 13, in the parking lot across from Bode Ice Arena at 2500 Southwest Parkway, with parking available at Phil Welch stadium, the REC center or in the grassy lots across the street. To sign up, visit the run's Facebook page.

For those who have a green thumb or are looking to start their gardening skills this year but don't have the seeds to get it going, the very first St. Joe Seed Swap can help out. There will be all sorts of seeds available to everyone at no cost. Or if you have seeds to contribute, go ahead and bring them. There will be various gardening and plant groups on site to share what they do in the community and give tips on how to grow a lustrous garden. This fun and free opportunity goes from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 13, at the Center for Joy at 1202 Felix St.

If you're looking for a good time this weekend but also want to help a good cause, then you should register for the Putt Putt Pub Crawl. It's raising funds for the Autism Alliance of Northwest Missouri this weekend. St. Joseph residents can make their way through nine Downtown bars, each of which will have themed holes for friendly games of putt-putt golf. Teams can register for $60 and compete in the best costume contest. The crawl kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, at each team's sign-up location. Most people know the story of Alice in Wonderland, but the Performing Arts Association has put a twist on the classic tale, creating the circus spectacular "Alice...Dreaming of Wonderland." Based on Alice's adventure, "Dreaming of Wonderland" is an action-packed and exciting theatrical circus show full of surprises and amazing acts, including the March Hare balancing on a tower of chairs during the tea party. The entire show could be summarized with one quote from Alice herself: "I'm not crazy, my reality is different from yours." The performance kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Missouri Theater. To purchase tickets, visit the Performing Arts Association's website at performingarts-saintjoseph.org/.

Didn't get enough running in on Saturday? Well then run on over to the Remington Nature Center on Sunday, April 14, for the fourth annual Tulip Trot 5k. All proceeds raised will go toward the Center for Parkinson's to keep all of its programs free for those with Parkinson's symptoms. The 5k run will give out medals for first, second and third places in each age bracket. For those who don't want to run, there's also a 1k walking option which will give out a goodie bag. The event kicks off at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Remington Nature Center. To register, visit the race's website at bit.ly/TulipTrot.
