“We’re allowed to talk about lightsabers!” coos Daisy Ridley at the start of the above behind-the-scenes clip. And not only does she and co-star John Boyega talk about the iconic weapons, we get to see how they trained to get their swordplay on in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), and other cast members spent three months drilling before cameras started rolling.
This video, available exclusively among the bonus features on the Target version of The Force Awakens Blu-ray/DVD set, shows Boyega rehearsing with his former Stormtrooper compatriot (known as FN-2199, a.k.a. “Nines”) for their screen confrontation outside Maz Kanata’s castle, as well as Boyega and Ridley facing Adam Driver (as Vader wannabe Kylo Ren) in the film’s climactic battle.

Boyega hints that Driver stayed in character as the emo Kylo Ren throughout their scene, giving their clash a sense of urgency. “I remember we were on set, Adam’s in character, and I felt the added weight of the saber sometimes when he would get so intense.”
The Force Awakens, with its myriad bonus features, arrives on digital services Friday and on Blu-ray/DVD Tuesday.
