Andie MacDowell, 64, rocked gray hair and an ultrahigh slit gown at Paris Fashion Week.
The salt-and-pepper curls perfectly complemented the fun feather-trimmed dress.
The silver strands are quickly becoming a signature look for the actress.
At this point, the red carpet has seen its fair share of Andie MacDowell’s luscious gray hair. But over the weekend, it was the catwalk’s turn to finally get a taste of its magic when MacDowell strutted the runway for Paris Fashion Week, her salt and pepper curls the perfect accessory.
MacDowell, 64, walked in L’Oreal Paris’ “Le Défilé Walk Your Worth” show wearing a one-shouldered striped gown with an extremely high-slit and feather-trimmed train. The actress and L’Oreal ambassador had fun with her modeling moment, playfully tousling her strands as she floated downstage. The dress and her hair were complemented by her sparkly silver eyeshadow.
Believe it or not, the Maid star’s gray mane kind of happened by accident, and it’s very quickly become her trademark. In 2020’s COVID-19 quarantine, her regular hair appointments were canceled, and she was left to either independently maintain her dark brunette hair or let her natural shade shine. With the encouragement of her daughters, she opted for the latter.
“What happened was, I wasn’t coloring my hair, and it was half-colored back here,” she said on The Drew Barrymore Show last year, touching the back of her head. “You could see my roots, and my daughters kept telling me that I looked badass. And [that] really appealed to me. So I went for it, and I am enjoying it.”
At the time, she said she wasn’t sure how long the look would stick around, but the longer it stays, the harder she seems to rock it. Plus, the style has become a jumping-off point for important conversations about aging, particularly the gender discrimination that comes with it—how gray hair is seen as “sexy” on older men but matronly on women. MacDowell, and her fellow gray-goers Helen Mirren, Jane Fonda, and more, are here to change that.
“I did Google actors with salt-and-pepper hair. There’s lots of men that do it!” she told Vogue last year. So, she prefers to compare her hue to the “edgy” style worn by and celebrated by George Clooney. And now, looking back on her brown hair, she doesn’t love it as much as she once did—which is why, when her managers told her not to go gray, she contested.
“The age on my face, to me, no longer matched. I somehow feel like I look younger because [the gray] looks more natural,” she said. “It’s not like I’m trying to hide something. I think that it’s a power move, and that’s what I kept telling my managers. It’s exactly what I need to be doing right here.”
Now, it’s clear that she proved her managers wrong. Two years in with the iconic look, and it just keeps getting better. Plus, she’s a runway star—who can argue with that!
