Three years after winning an Emmy for portraying Margaret Thatcher, Gillian Anderson returns to British politics as a member of the fourth estate in “Scoop.” The Netflix film stars the actress as the “Newsnight” journalist Emily Maitlis, who sat down for a squirm-inducing interview with Prince Andrew, Duke of York, portrayed by a physically transformed Rufus Sewell. The actor has of late been playing an American politician on the streamer’s “The Diplomat.” Watch the full “Scoop” trailer below.

The trailer begins with a voiceover promising that “an hour of television can change everything.” The film follows Billie Piper’s producer Sam McAlister, who is determined to land this major sit-down despite being told she is “chasing a story we’re never gonna get.” Her zeal only intensifies when details about Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein become public knowledge. When she does score a clandestine meeting with Prince Andrew to win him over, she pitches him on the idea of the BBC chat by being frank about his reputation, calling him “Randy Andy” to his face.

Though landing the interview is a coup, those inside the BBC know it’s a high-wire act, warning Maitlis and others that “if we don’t get the tone right, the story won’t be him. It’ll be us.” The film, which drops on the streaming service on Friday, April 5, promises to explore the fallout from the airing of the interview as well. In addition to Anderson, Piper and Sewell, “Scoop” stars Keeley Hawes, and the trailer offers a glimpse of Anderson’s “Sex Education” costar Connor Swindells as a paparazzo. The film was cowritten by Geoff Bussetil and Peter Moffat and directed by Philip Martin.
