Sally Field has walked down the aisle twice and she’s telling the world it will never happen again. At least, that’s how the 77-year-old actress feels right now about the idea of marriage — she could always change her mind.

Field revealed her thoughts on the subject on the season premiere of Lemonada Media’s Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus podcast, and she has a good reason for crossing marriage off her list for good. “I was never really good at picking a partner for myself,” the Oscar winner explained. She was married to Steve Craig from 1968 to 1975 and then got married for a second time to Alan Greisman from 1984 to 1994. She admitted that neither man was a “good match” for her and any thought of saying “I do” again just makes her laugh.

“I can’t imagine,” Field added. “It would certainly all depend on meeting somebody I wanted to spend more than 37 seconds with. And I can’t imagine that either! So I don’t know.” Her revelation isn’t that surprising, though, after she revealed in the book, 50 Oscar Nights, that longtime love Burt Reynolds almost ruined her 1980 Oscars night where she won Best Actress for Norma Rae.

“He really was not a nice guy around me then,” she told author Dave Karger. “He said, ‘You don’t think you’re going to win anything, do you?’” By the time the Oscars ceremony rolled around, Reynolds decided that he “was not going to go” as her date because she was garnering too much attention for her talents — he was downright jealous. Actor David Steinberg and his then-wife, Judy, stepped up to make the night special for her instead.

So, it’s not shocking that Field is happy as a strong, independent woman. She realized a long time ago that finding a mate wasn’t her strongest suit. “I’ve just never been good at picking a person, a partner, to be with who would be loving and know me and not want to change me and also be challenging to me,” Field summed up to Louis-Dreyfus. It sounds like a perfectly sound and relatable reason to stay single!
