Actor Robert De Niro is warning that democracy is at risk in the 2024 election, and called Donald Trump a “monster.”

“Do you think our democracy is at risk in this election?” MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle asked De Niro in an interview that aired Thursday.

“I think that it is. I always keep saying democracy is great, of course, but democracy, people take for granted. It's a word that some people don't even understand,” De Niro said. “It's about right and wrong. Period.”

Earlier in the interview, De Niro said he didn’t understand how people could vote for the former president despite his violent rhetoric, and compared it to how people in Europe reacted to Hitler and Mussolini when they rose to power.

“The guy's a monster. It's beyond wrong. It's almost like he wants to do the most horrible things that he can think of in order to get a rise out of us? … It's fucking scary,” De Niro said. “Excuse my French.”
