Whether that would involve a resurrection of Iron Man is unclear. Just "never, ever bet against Kevin Feige," the actor says.

Don't count out Tony Stark just yet. It's possible viewers could see Robert Downey Jr. return to his iconic Marvel superhero role at some point in the future.

Downey brought his decade-long run as Iron Man to a close with the character's climactic death in Avengers: Endgame. Now that he's just won an Oscar for his scene-stealing performance in Oppenheimer, it sure feels like the actor has closed the book on his superhero days as he moves into another chapter of his career. But in a new interview with Esquire, Downey made clear he would "happily" return to the role, even after winning the big trophy.

“It’s too integral a part of my DNA," Downey told Esquire. "That role chose me. And look, I always say, never, ever bet against [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

Five years after Endgame, the most recent Avengers movie still stands as the peak of the MCU's commercial and cultural power. Since then, the franchise has struggled to find replacements for the star power of Downey or Chris Evans, who also bowed out as Captain America with Endgame. At the end of last year, a report in Variety suggested that Marvel Studios was considering bringing back the original stars of The Avengers, though Evans said publicly that the idea was "news to me."

It would certainly feel like a retreat, and Marvel is still working on a new future. There are promising MCU projects on the horizon, with a Fantastic Four movie finally cast and repeated hints that the X-Men are on their way. Only if those projects fail to take off

Feige even said last year, in another profile of Downey Jr, that the studio would never undo Stark's Endgame death: “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”

But in a fictional multiverse, the possibilities are almost endless. We could always see a different version of Stark from a parallel universe, or time travel. Downey certainly doesn't seem opposed to the idea.
