‘Road House’ and ‘Shogun’ Hold Strong in Netflix-Dominated Streaming Top 10

Modern streaming viewership frequently feels like an exercise in churn. With a constant barrage of premieres every week, audiences never run out of new programming choices, which is reflected in the constant movement on the weekly top streaming programs chart. It’s rare for a streaming title to be the most-watched program in back-to-back weeks and even rarer for a non-Netflix title to achieve that feat.

But for the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for the week of March 25 to 31, we’re seeing remarkable stability, including a back-to-back chart-topper from Amazon Prime Video and a Hulu / FX hit with staying power. Impressively, 60% of last week’s most-watched streaming programs all made the chart again this week.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Road House” rehash holds onto No. 1 for the second consecutive week, a major achievement for both the film and Amazon Prime Video. At No. 2 is “3 Body Problem,” Netflix’s big-budget sci-fi epic from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The slow-burn show moved from No. 6 up to No. 2 in its second week on the charts.

At No. 3 is “Shōgun,” another non-Netflix sensation that has been a Top 3 mainstay for the past five weeks. At No. 4 is “Homicide: New York,” the Netflix true-crime series from “Law & Order” creator Dick Wolf, up one spot from last week. It’s followed by “The Gentlemen,” also on Netflix, which has been lodged in the top half of the chart for a month now.

Netflix owns the bottom half of the chart, including our first new-ish entry of the week. “The Accountant,” at No. 6, is not a new production but a 2016 theatrical release that recently came to Netflix. The Ben Affleck-starring thriller is one of many recent examples of old movies achieving renewed interest after moving to a popular streaming platform. It’s followed by another library title, “On the Line,” a 2022 film starring Mel Gibson at No. 7.

No. 8 is the docudrama series “Testament: The Story of Moses” (more on him in a minute). It’s followed by “Shirley,” a dramatic retelling of Shirley Chisholm’s campaign for the 1972 Democratic presidential nomination, starring Regina King. The election year and King’s successful publicity tour may have helped the movie grab 248,000 U.S. households over its premiere weekend, with Black households over-indexing by 140%.

Last but not least is the final holdover from last week’s Top 10: the Lindsay Lohan comeback vehicle “Irish Wish.” Despite falling from No. 5 to No. 10, the film is holding strong even a few weeks after St. Patrick’s Day, likely riding a wave of word-of-mouth buzz.

Over on linear, the fifth episode of Season 4 of the CBS crime drama “The Equalizer” was the most watched linear program of the week, besting the 1956 holiday classic “The Ten Commandments” (No. 2) and NBC’s singing competition powerhouse “The Voice” (No. 3 this week).

From there, it’s the regular fare as the top linear programs remain stable. “The Bachelor” season finale is No. 4, followed by “American Idol” at No. 5. In scripted content, CBS’s “FBI” is No. 6, while NBC’s “Chicago Med” is No. 7, and “Chicago Fire” also on NBC is No.9.

“Wheel of Fortune” closes out the list, claiming the No. 8 and No. 10 spots.
