‘Road House’ Dominates Streaming on Easter Weekend

What the movie-streaming public wants depends on which top 10 chart you prefer. This week offered little consistency and some outright contradictions.

One thing is clear: Jake Gyllenhaal’s straight-to-streaming “Road House” remake is a massive hit. Amazon Prime reported over 50 million worldwide viewers through its second streaming weekend and gateway app Reelgood reported it as the week’s #1 movie for March 21-27 in the U.S.

“The Accountant,” a 2016 Warner Bros. drama starring Ben Affleck, is currently #1 at Netflix. On Easter weekend “The Passion of the Christ” led VOD at iTunes, while the just-released $19.99 “Imaginary” (Lionsgate) topped Fandango’s revenue-calculated list. (It was #20 at iTunes.) For a second week, Google Play did not update its list.

“Ordinary Angels” (also Lionsgate) is #2 at Fandango, but #14 at iTunes. Since Fandango calculates by revenue, that list favors PVODs — but this week, six of its top 10 rented for $5.99 or less; “The Passion of the Christ,” only $3.99, was #8.

Easter also elevated “Hop” (#3) and “The Ten Commandments” (#7) at iTunes, but neither Netflix nor Reelgood reflected a boost for holiday-related titles.

Netflix’s current top 10 contains five originals, starting with the French-language “The Wages of Fear.” After William Friedkin’s “Sorcerer,” it’s the second remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s classic adventure tale of truckers transporting nitroglycerine. Also new at #3 is the South African “Heart of the Hunter,” Polish rom-com “No Pressure” at #5, and Bill Nighy as a British soccer coach in “The Beautiful Game” at #8.

“Road House” is #3 at Reelgood, behind Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” and “Quiet on Set” (Max). Oddly, “Irish Spring” was ahead of “Damsel” each day during the the seven-day period, but the fantasy starring Millie Bobby Brown placed at Reelgood as the sole Netflix entry.

Finally, the lists saw two significant dropoffs. After two weeks, “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), is gone from iTunes and dropped from #1 to sixth on Fandango. “Shirley,” another Netflix original, also fell off its list after an eight-day run, reaching as high as #8.

VOD Top 10s

iTunes and Google Play rank films daily by number of transactions, while Fandango at Home lists by revenue. The listings below are for Monday, April 1. Google Play’s top 10 has not been updated, now for two weeks. We will list them when they return.
