Remember when the entire internet was convinced that The Tortured Poets Department was fully going to be about Joe Alwyn? To be fair, the evidence was there thanks to song titles like “So Long London” (that one did turn out to be about Joe) and Easter eggs galore. But yeah....turns out, this album is—seemingly! at least according to fans!—almost entirely about Taylor’s brief and tumultuous relationship with Matty Healy.

Much of Tortured Poets traces Taylor’s whirlwind relationship with Matty, explores the backlash from fans as well as her own inner circle, and deals with their dramatic split (she truly goes in on “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”).

So...how does Matty feel about seemingly having almost an entire album devoted to their relationship? He’s stayed quiet so far, but back in February—mere days after Taylor announced The Tortured Poets Department—The 1975 front man went on a pretty unsubtle rant mid-performance. The topic? An unnamed person that fans think is/was clearly Taylor.

“Do not come for me,” Matty said. “Trust me. You know who I’m talking to. Honestly, you know who you are. I’m as mental as I seem. I have the receipts. Don’t fuck with me. Trust me.”

I mean...possible he was talking to/about someone else? But yeah...considering this went down on February 8 and Taylor announced The Tortured Poets Department on February 5, the timing was certainly something!
