It’s Bob Saget’s birthday today and we’re celebrating the life of television’s most beloved dad. The comedian brought so much laughter and joy into our homes with his role as Danny Tanner in the forever iconic Full House. He was also a brilliant stand-up comedian and TV host.

Saget sadly died in January 2022 as a result of blunt head trauma. His family released a statement thanking fans for “the incredible outpouring of love…which has been a great comfort to us and for which we are eternally grateful.”

“As we continue to mourn together, we ask everyone to remember the love and laughter that Bob brought to this world, and the lessons he taught us all: to be kind to everyone, to let the people you love know you love them, and to face difficult times with hugs and laughter,” they added.

Saget had three adult daughters: Aubrey, Lara, and Jennifer. We looked back on some of the comedian’s best quotes about fatherhood and the important lessons he imparted on his children.

A version of this article was published in 2022.

When Saget published his book Dirty Daddy, the critics he was most excited to impress were his children.

“The thing that brought me the most pride, especially with a book called Dirty Daddy, is that my three daughters said, all seperately, all at different times, that what an accomplishment it was and how proud they were of me,” Saget told Boston.com. “Even prouder that I remembered all of it, which is, when you’re having a blur in the middle of a mid-life crisis, most people don’t even know you’re there.”

Saget tragically lost his sister in 1994 and he developed a coping mechanism that would lay the foundation for the rest of his life.

“Humor is the only way my family survived,” he told CBS News. “It’s so healthy to laugh, and I’m out there doing it and I know it’s healing for people.”

“To anyone afraid to love, unconditional love is the greatest of gifts,” Lara Saget, Bob’s daughter, wrote in an Instagram post following his death. “My dad loved with everything he had. He had so many reasons to be scared to love. So many loved ones kept dropping the body.”

“Instead of being scared, he loved more. I am beyond grateful to receive and to give that love.  Love completely and be kind. Of all the lessons he taught me, these feel the biggest.”

“I’ve put my entire soul into raising my daughters and will continue to because it’s the most rewarding part of my life,” Saget wrote in Dirty Daddy: The Chronicles of a Family Man Turned Filthy Comedian. “But they’ve also inspired me and taught me how to embrace and step up to that honored role of being a father in general.”

“I get college audiences look at me apparently as the dad they wish they had and, yeah, it’s only for an hour and about as superficial of a connection as can exist compared to actual real-life parenting but I still take it very seriously,” the comedian said in Dirty Daddy: The Chronicles of a Family Man Turned Filthy Comedian.

We’d be remiss not to sneak in a quote from Danny Tanner. In the first season of Full House, the TV dad offered these powerful words about coping with the death of a beloved family member.

“Talking about it, that’s what helps me. Talking about the memories. That’s what keeps her in your heart,” he said.
