It’s no secret that Witherspoon has been behind many of Hollywood’s biggest book-to-screen adaptations in the past few years. From Where the Crawdads Sing to Daisy Jones & The Six, Witherspoon loves to join her love for books and producing all in one. Plus, she’s quite brilliant at it too.

So, after announcing her May book club pick, How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang, some fans of Witherspoon might have chuckled reading the synopsis. Much like Witherspoon, the main characters of the book are adapting a book into TV. Sound familiar?

“Our May @reesesbookclub pick is here!” The Morning Show star wrote on Instagram alongside pictures of her reading the novel. “#HowToEndALoveStory by @yulin.kuang is about what happens when two writers with a complicated history end up working on the same TV show… but can they re-write their story?”

The caption then added an important content warning. “Author’s Note: This story contains on-the-page discussions of complicated grief, suicide loss, and the death of a sibling.”

Reading the official blurb, readers can get a better grasp of the story. The novel follows Helen Zhang and Grant Shepard, two people who once witnessed a “tragic accident” together and have tried their best to move on in the past 13 years.

“Now a bestselling author, Helen pours everything into her career,” the description reads. “She’s even scored a coveted spot in the writers’ room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer’s block, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too.”

“Grant has done everything in his power to move on from the past, including building a life across the country,” the description adds. “And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away, he’s well-liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the job on Helen’s show, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can’t pass up.”

Finding themselves back together after so many years, Grant and Helen have a whirlwind of mixed emotions. Working together is messy, and electrifying, and Helen’s parents, who have never forgiven Grant, have no idea he’s in the picture at all,” the description reads.

“When secrets come to light, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story,” the synopsis continues. “And yet… the key to making peace with their past—and themselves—might just lie in holding on to each other in the present.”
