The Real Reason Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Refused Archie’s Earl of Dumbarton Title

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry understandably have a lot of concerns for their son, Archie Harrison. In addition to doing their best to keep Archie out of the public eye, Meghan and Harry want to keep him from getting bullied about his titles too—because Archie’s descended from royals, he had the option of being called the Earl of Dumbarton…which Meghan and Harry promptly rejected because they didn’t want Archie to be teased.

“They didn’t like the idea of Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton because it began with the word ‘dumb’ [and] they were worried about how that might look,” a royal source told The Telegraph. A second source chimed in and added that “it wasn’t just Meghan who pointed out the potential pitfalls, it also bothered Harry,” which, IMO, is totally understandable.

For the record, Meghan and Harry technically wanted Archie to be a prince strictly for protection and security reasons—a move that would have deviated from royal protocol—but the palace was not down with that suggestion. During their tell-all interview with Oprah, Meghan said:

“They were saying they didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, which would be different from protocol, and that he wasn’t going to receive security. This went on for the last few months of our pregnancy, where I was going, ‘Hold on for a second.’ They said [he’s not going to get security] because he’s not going to be a prince. Okay, well, he needs to be safe so we’re not saying don’t make him a prince or princess, but if you’re saying the title is what’s going to affect that protection, we haven’t created this monster machine around us in terms of clickbait and tabloid fodder. You’ve allowed that to happen, which means our son needs to be safe.”

Instead of using the Earl of Dumbarton title, Archie is referred to as Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor—a much better-sounding (and arguably cooler!) choice, TBH!
