Queen Mary of Denmark Dazzles in Queen Margrethe’s Tiara for First Time at Norway State Visit

The Queen of Denmark also reportedly reworked her gown like Kate Middleton has in the past

Queen Mary of Denmark had a sparkling debut in a tiara deeply entrenched in Danish history during her first state visit to Norway with King Frederik since his accession.

On May 14, Queen Mary, 52, glittered for the first time in the Pearl Poire Tiara, which has been worn by the queens of Denmark since the 1800s. Most recently, the historic headtopper was worn by her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, who last wore the tiara in January shortly before her unexpected abdication from the throne.

The pearl tiara is part of a married parure, which includes matching pearl earrings, as well as a brooch featuring a large diamond and pearl cluster, according to fan blog The Court Jeweller. Mary used the brooch to secure the sash of the Order of St. Olav to her periwinkle gown as she attended a banquet hosted by King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

Mary's gown was not only striking for its ethereal design, but also because it might be a rewear! According to fashion fan account UFO No More, it appeared to be reworked version of the periwinkle gown she wore Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden's wedding in Stockholm in June 2015.

A semi-sheer fabric of the same shade was draped over the bodice and created sleeves, putting a new spin on a gown that was allegedly already in her closet. Queen Mary isn't the only modern royal to update a gown this way — in February 2023, Kate Middleton re-wore the white Alexander McQueen gown to the BAFTA Film Awards that she attended the same ceremony in in 2019. The Princess of Wales, 42, restyled the asymmetric neckline's corsage-style embellishment on left shoulder to a regal sweep of white chiffon.

Frederik and Mary's two-day stay in Norway is part of a series of state visits they are undertaking this summer. The Danish Royal House previously said in a statement that the King and Queen are traveling abroad to honor the close relationships between the Nordic monarchies, and kicked off their first state visit of the new reign in Sweden last week.

From Sweden, they journeyed to Norway, where they'll spend two days touring and visiting with the Norwegian royal family, with whom they share close social ties. According to Tatler, King Frederik served as the best man at the Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit's wedding in 2001, and King Frederik became a godfather to their daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, the future queen of Denmark, when she was born in 2004.

The Crown Prince and Princess of Norway were made godparents to Frederik and Mary's firstborn son, Crown Prince Christian, when he was born in 2005, and the Norwegian royals attended his glam 18th birthday gala in Copenhagen in October 2023.

King Frederik got to connect with his goddaughter Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 20, during the state visit, as seen in a sweet snap the Danish Royal House shared to Instagram, and the trip itself fell during Frederik and Mary's 20th wedding anniversary on May 14.

During the gala dinner held in honor of their visit, King Harald paid tribute to the couple, saying, "Dear Mary, you took on a big task when you went and fell in love with this sporty Dane. You gave up a lot that was safe and familiar. You made Denmark and the Danes your own heartland and heartland. I know that you have also been a great support for our beloved Queen Margrethe."

King Harald, 87, was referencing Frederik and Mary's love story, which began with a meet-cute during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Mary Donaldson, an Australian advertising executive, found herself chatting to “Fred” and instantly hit it off, later sharing that she had no idea he was the prince of Denmark, heir to the 1,000-year-old Danish throne.

The couple dated long-distance before getting engaged and married at Copenhagen Cathedral on May 14, 2004, and went on to welcome four children: Crown Prince Christian, 18 (who took his father's former title upon the change of reign), Princess Isabella, 17, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 13.

At the gala, King Harald continued, "Just today the two of you have been married for 20 years — surely that deserves a round of applause? We think it's very nice that you chose to celebrate your wedding anniversary here with us tonight!"

Up next, King Frederik and Queen Mary are tentatively set sail to the Faroe Islands and Greenland in June and July, which are both in the kingdom of Denmark.
