Public speaking expert reveals major trick to remove ‘filler words’ from your vocabulary: ‘It's actually a lot of fun’

An expert public speaker is going viral with her extremely easy trick for removing “filler words” from your vocabulary.

The simple trick comes from a TikToker named Dellara (@legalbaddie). The popular creator is a lawyer, activist and multi-time national champion in public speaking.

OK, once and for all, what is crypto and should you have some?

Dellara says the tip, which she learned at a speech and debate “boot camp,” played a huge role in her championship-winning skills. And, she adds, it’s not even that hard to learn.

“It’s actually a lot of fun,” she says.

In her video, which now has over 6 million views, Dellara explains a “game” that helps you remove words like “um,” “like” or “you know” from your everyday vocabulary.

To start, get a friend and have them yell out a random topic. Then it’s your job to speak on that topic for 60 seconds straight without using any filler words.

If you use one of those forbidden words, your friend is supposed to stop you. Then you have to restart from the beginning, repeating the process over and over again until you can go 60 seconds without any filler.

“It’s gonna be really hard at first,” Dellara says in the clip. “But you’re gonna get better quickly, and it’s gonna be so rewarding.”

Dellara says she thinks this practice isn’t just for professional public speakers. It also can make you feel more confident and comfortable with sharing your thoughts in general.

“People are gonna be way more likely to listen to what you have to say,” she adds.

Studies have shown that filler words do tend to have an impact on a speaker’s credibility. Words like “um” and “like” are sometimes a sign of nervousness, and even if they aren’t people often perceive them to be.

That said, many have also argued about the virtues of filler words. In an article for the Harvard Business Review, public speaking expert Allison Shapira wrote that while these words may signal nervousness, they can also make a person sound more diplomatic, or help them jump into an ongoing argument.

TikTokers, in general, really appreciated the tip. Many agreed heavily with Dellara’s tip to replace filler words with pauses.

“I was just taught to pause instead of use a filler word,” one user wrote. “I thought it would be awkward but it really isn’t.”

“I struggle with this so much!!! I needed this,” another added.

“Oof I’m sweating just thinking about how tough this would be!” another wrote. “Great tip.”
