The sci-fi drama Severance was a breakout hit in its first season, earning 14 Emmy nominations—including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nods for Adam Scott, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. The first season ended on a major cliffhanger, but thankfully, Apple TV+ already renewed the show for a second season.

Since season one ended, however, there's been scant news about when it will return. Early in January 2024, Ben Stiller tweeted, "we are working on it" with the saluting emoji, and in April 2024, the Severance costume designer seemed to reveal the season had finished filming.

Here's everything we know so far about Severance season two.

The second season was confirmed right before the first season wrapped up.

Stiller shared the story has always been a "multi-season" story, indicating they always planned for more than one season of Severance. "It’s really exciting to see the response from people who are loving the show – and the level of fan engagement. It has been a long road bringing Severance to television. I first read Dan’s pilot over five years ago," director Ben Stiller said in a statement. "It has always been a multi-season story, and I’m really happy we get to continue it. I’m grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ who have been behind it the whole way. Praise Kier!”

Apple TV's head of programming Matt Cherniss also shared, "We’re excited to go deeper into this wholly unique world and unpack more layers of Lumon in season two."

Adam Scott has sat in on the writer's room, and is really looking forward to the season. "I think that it’s going to be a really fun, satisfying season," Scott told Deadline. "I mean, that’s the thing, is making the show was really challenging, but it was really fun, just a blast. So, I can’t wait to get back to it."

Production for season two began in October 2022, and finished in April 2024.

"We are thrilled and delighted to be back on set for the exciting second chapter of Severance," Ben Stiller said in a statement. "Though we don’t know how long we’ve been gone or who we are outside, we are told people enjoy the show and we couldn’t be happier. Praise Kier!" Apple TV+ also released a still from filming:

There was a pause in production due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and in January 2024, Apple TV+ posted a photograph, indicating production had resumed. Stiller retweeted it, and wrote, "Back to work."

"It’s not really a straight line process, and it never was with this show. [Director-EP] Ben [Stiller] is very involved with the creation of the story, which is the same as how it was in Season 1," creator Dan Erickson said. "It was always about this sort of weird alchemy of his ideas and my ideas, and filtering those through each other until we get something that we both agree feels right. So, it’s a really in-depth process, but a joyful process, and that’s what we’re doing right now."

In April 2024, costume designer Carol Deelay posted on her Instagram story, "It's a wrap on season 2!"

Season two will "expand" the world of Lumon.

"There’s definitely going to be some expansion of the world," Erickson told Esquire. "Within Lumon, we’re going to see more of the building, and we’ll see more of the outside world, too."

The second season will hopefully begin to answer the mystery around Mark's wife Gemma. "There’s a question of sort of who was targeted first: was Mark targeted because of his relationship to Gemma, or was it the other way around? And that’s something that we don’t see this season, but we will in subsequent seasons," Erickson told Variety. "That’s the big question, what is special about Mark? And is it actually that there’s something special about him or is it more about Gemma, and he was sort of pulled in? Those are all left unanswered this season, but we will get into it."

At Comic-Con 2022, Ben Stiller shared he is excited to expand on the world, too, and "get deeper into these characters and these stories."

He also promised season two will provide answers. "By the end of season one, there's so many new questions that were brought up," Stiller says. "As an audience, you're wanting those answers, and I think for us, it's about being able to make something that's satisfying enough for the audience that they feel like a lot of those questions are dealt with—if not answered completely–or some of them are, some of them aren't."

Patricia Arquette, who plays Harmony Cobel, also told Entertainment Tonight that fans should "be scared, very scared" of season two. She added, "These guys have been working really hard, and come up with a lot of really creative things."

The main cast is returning.

The entire main cast—Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, Dichen Lachman, Jen Tullock, Tramell Tillman, Michael Chernus, and Christopher Walken—will return for season two.

They'll be joined by eight new cast members: Bob Balaban, Robby Benson, Stefano Carannante, Gwendoline Christie, John Noble, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Ali Shawkat, and Merritt Wever. All the new cast members are in unspecified roles.

There's no premiere date yet.

There's a chance we could be waiting quite some time for season two, but hopefully it won't be too long. Stiller tweeted, "It took us a couple of years to make S1. Hope you can hang in!"

All of season one is currently available to stream while you wait for season two.
