Actor Paul Rudd knows what it takes to transform into another person for a role, and this octopus has the talent.

Rudd, who turned 55 on April 6, is the narrator for National Geographic's upcoming docuseries Secrets of the Octopus. PEOPLE has an exclusive sneak peek at the miniseries, which will explore the alien-like qualities of octopi — the animals have three hearts and blue blood — along with their intelligence, social skills, and unique abilities.

One of the series' octopus stars is the mimic octopus, an animal known for its remarkable ability to morph its appearance to impersonate other sea creatures.

In the exclusive clip from Secrets of the Octopus shared with PEOPLE, Rudd narrates a mimic octopus' treacherous journey through the ocean in search of food.

"The quest for his next meal has brought him into someone else's territory," Rudd narrates as the brown octopus swims along. The territory belongs to a group of damselfish with a short fuse.

The footage shows the territorial damselfish approaching the octopus, who attempts to camouflage with his surroundings by changing the appearance of his skin to match the ocean floor.

The fish don't take the bait and start to bite the octopus. In response, the mimic octopus tries another trick to dodge the "nasty" biting fish.

"So the mimic transforms into the one thing they won't mess with, a venomous sea krait," Rudd says.

Sea kraits are black-and-white striped sea snakes that often feast on fish, crabs, and eels. In the clip, the mimic octopus impersonates one of these creatures, turning his tentacles into snake-like appendages that are the same colors as a sea krait.

"The damselfish are certainly convinced," Rudd says of the octopus' "Oscar-worthy performance" as the fish swim away.

The impressive impersonation is just a slice of the octopi magic animal lovers can expect from Secrets of the Octopus. The docuseries will premiere on April 21, which is Earth Day, on National Geographic at 8 p.m. EST/7 p.m. CST and will be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu on April 22.
