On the live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga, he is working alongside returning Season 1 writer, executive producer and co-showrunner Matt Owens. This marks a return to Netflix for Tracz who served as a writer-producer on the streamer’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events, based on the book series of the same name by Lemony Snicket, and as co-creator-executive producer on Dash & Lily, based on the YA books.

In his statement to Deadline about joining One Piece, Tracz references his recent string of literary adaptations, and references’ Straw Hat Pirate’s Season 2 destination as teased in the Season 1 finale.

“I’ve been lucky to work on big adaptations of several beloved series, and they don’t come bigger or more beloved than One Piece,” Tracz said. “I’m a huge fan of Oda-san’s incredible imagination and I was blown away by what the live-action team created in Season One. So it’s a dream and a joy to come aboard the Going Merry as it enters the Grand Line for an even more giant Season Two.”

Owens kept with the nautical theme in his statement about Tracz joining the show.

“Joe has brought a wealth of enthusiasm and experience into our second season that will help take One Piece to new heights,” he said. “We’re incredibly lucky to have him as a co-captain of this ship. The best crew on the seas grows larger!”

One Piece is coming off winning the WGA Award in the Children’s Episodic, Long Form & Specials category for the pilot episode, co-written by Owens and Maeda.

Season 1 of the action adventure spent 8 weeks in Netflix’s Global Top 10, reaching the Top 10 in 93 countries and debuting at #1 in 46. It also logged a 95% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes from 10,000+ ratings, among the highest ever for a Netflix series.

One Piece, about Monkey D. Luffy who assembles a crew as he sets out to find the legendary fabled treasure, One Piece, and become King of the Pirates, stars Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

The series is done in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios, an ITV Studios partner, and Netflix. Season 2 executive producers include showrunners Matt Owens & Joe Tracz, Oda, Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements through Tomorrow Studios, Tetsu Fujimura, Chris Symes and Maeda.

Tracz is repped by WME, Mosaic, and Hansen Jacobson.
